Environmental Focus

Charter School of the Dunes believes that the best way for students to intrinsically care about the environment is to actually get them outside participating in stewardship. In conjunction with the Alliance for the Great Lakes, our students have done data collection and cleaned up Gary beaches for close to a decade.

This school year we have added new programs to give students a multitude of exposure to green space in our backyard and within the city of Gary. Our fourth grade students now participate in Mighty Acorns and our high school students have the opportunity to participate in Calumet Is My Backyard (CIMBY).  These programs give our students the chance to see how green space is important and beneficial to all living things.

If we give our students a variety of opportunities to demonstrate and learn about environmental stewardship, they will one day graduate with a deep understanding of the importance and need for preservation and sustainability.

Our environmental focus continues to grow and we are excited for more opportunities for students to demonstrate stewardship throughout their community and region.  Stewardship teaches lifelong lessons but also helps our students shine when it comes time to apply for college.
